Tax Authorities VAR applications

As an Independent Professional / ZZP-er you must have a VAR or in full the Declaration of Employment Relationship. The VAR is a statement from the Tax Authorities that confirms the position of the Independent Professional as an independent entrepreneur.

What exactly is a VAR declaration?

A VAR-declaration is a declaration issued by the Tax Authorities about the working relationship you have as a ZZP'er with a principal. With a VAR, your principal knows that you are an independent entrepreneur. It exempts the principal from paying taxes and premiums on your remuneration. You have to pay those premiums and taxes yourself as an Independent Professional.

VAR application to Tax office
The VAR must be requested from the tax office via a form. Depending on the situation, the Tax Office grants one of the following VAR declarations:

  • VAR-WUO (profit from business);
  • VAR-Loon (Wage from employment);
  • VAR-ROW (Income from other activities);
  • VAR-DGA (Work for the account and risk of a company).

The type of VAR you receive as a result of your application determines what kind of working relationship you have with your principal. It also determines how the tax authorities view your income. So this may have implications for the self-employment you desire as a ZZP.

By the way, an assigned VAR does not make you an entrepreneur! In addition to the VAR from the Tax Authorities, as a starter you must also register with the Chamber of Commerce (CoC). Your registration in the Commercial Register of the Chamber of Commerce formalizes your entrepreneurship.
