Getting started with E-learning

Freedom in the what, when and how of learning is the big advantage of e-learning. But unfortunately, there are also disadvantages to taking a course on your own and without peer pressure. The biggest pitfall is that, after an enthusiastic start to an online course, you do not get into a 'fixed' learning rhythm, which means that you ultimately do not complete it successfully. A shame, because you have invested in it. Probably also with a clear goal in mind. We give you some tips to successfully get started with e-learning in our training environment Striive Academy.

What is the best way to process the material?

Learn in different ways and alternate learning formats

  • Watch the videos
  • Take notes/diagrams
  • Read the transcripts
  • Use any mock exams, LiveLabs, bootcamps, etc.

Take the course tests and repeat the material where you got questions wrong

  • Make sure you really understand the material and don't just memorize the answers
  • Spread out your learning, your brain needs time to process everything

Repetition is key!

  • Regularly refer back to your notes and/or diagrams
  • Repeat the course tests
  • Test yourself, ask yourself questions about the material

How do you stay focused?

Ensure a pleasant place to study

  • Avoid distractions from noise. If necessary, use earplugs or noise cancelling headphones
  • A tidy desk is a must
  • Put your phone away or use apps such as Cold Turkey or Forest. Take active notes while working through modules, focusing on key points
  • Study when your energy level is highest
  • Try to work on a task for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break

Time management & planning

  • Make a weekly schedule
  • Which module(s) are you going to work on?
  • When are you going to start?
  • Make a to-do list and tick it off. Nothing beats ticking off lists!
  • Is your schedule realistic?
  • How much time do you need per week/month to complete the training on time?
  • Do you plan enough study time for this?
  • Take into account other circumstances
  • Planned holidays
  • Busy periods around your assignment
  • How do you prevent procrastination?
  • Make your schedule as concrete as possible
  • Study at fixed times and create a routine
  • Provide your own short-term deadlines
  • 5 minutes of learning is always better than not learning at all. Make learning a habit
  • Reward yourself after a productive study session
