Starting as an entrepreneur

“The reason I became a self-employed professional was partially financial, but also because of the freedom it gave me. At a certain point, I was already working quite independently and taking on various projects, that it made sense to choose entrepreneurship. Instead of being employed by an employer, I could now manage my own time and work on project basis for various clients.

However, my first assignment turned out to be such a large program that I stayed there longer than planned. It was a big project with continuous new challenges, which made it interesting to stay longer. When that project was completed, I started working at another organization. That assignment ended in early 2023, and I had to look for a new one.”

A new way of finding assignments

“I got these previous assignments through my own network. But this time I went searching online. I had heard of the intermediary HeadFirst and its largest platform for independent professionals in the Netherlands: Striive. That's how I came across assignments, including one for a Project Manager at the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW). I applied, and it turned out to be a match! Over the past year, I worked there with great pleasure. But as of July 1st 2024, my assignment there ended, as planned.”

“When an assignment ends, you have to reapply. Both my client and I wanted to continue working together. Therefore, I indicated through Striive that the assignment would end and that I wanted to reapply for it. This was handled quickly and smoothly, so there was no need to look for another assignment. Now I will continue at the Ministry of OCW as a project manager, again through Striive.

It is nice that everything goes digitally and relatively fast due to the platform. Because I work for the government, I had to submit many documents, which I wasn’t used to with my previous assignments. It’s convenient that the platform makes this process so easy. I was very satisfied with this and see many advantages in it. There are many assignments on the platform, and I find the 14-day payment term very pleasant. Additionally, I find the experience and reliability very important.”
